Report on a group lesson at Whistler

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

On Saturday, Dave and I took advantage of a season pass holders’ deal to get a snowboarding lesson for only $20 each per half day. This was an ordinary group lesson focusing on technique, rather than the Summit Session we tried a fortnight ago, which focused on exploring the mountain.
All the pupils at levels 3 [...]

Summit Sessions Riding Clinic at Whistler

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

On Saturday, Dave and I took advantage of the 40% off Discover Whistler deal, and booked ourselves onto a Summit Session Riding Clinic. The clinics are aimed at intermediate to advanced riders, and are advertised as a way to explore the mountains and increase your experience on different terrain.
They should also be advertised as a great [...]

Report on Whistler opening weekend

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

This report was originally written for the Powderroom blog.
Due to early season snow storms and a base of almost a metre of snow, Whistler opened five days early on the 17th of November. I had to go to Alice and James’s baby shower on the 17th but we drove up from Vancouver in the pouring rain that [...]

Turkey Sale

Thursday, October 11th, 2007

This weekend we went up to Whistler for the Turkey Sale.
The Turkey Sale is held every Canadian Thanksgiving weekend and is a huge sale of last season’s ski and snowboard gear plus sample items of this season’s stuff. We got a fantasic accommodation deal, staying in a studio at the Whistler Village Inn and Suites [...]

Velvet Flurry goggles

Friday, June 29th, 2007

For years I had trouble finding goggles that suited me. I would steal Dave’s because they were better than what I had, then steal his new ones, and so on. I found that they were all too big for my face, and that the nose bridge came up too high and obscured my vision.
Then, while [...]

Snowboarding in June

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

At the beginning of June, Dave and I went up to Whistler for the last weekend of snowboarding on Blackcomb Mountain. We haven’t been riding since March because of Dave’s heel so it was wonderful to get out there.
Not being accustomed to boarding in June, we totally overdressed, in a single underlayer and a [...]

This is what I look like… a lot of the time!

Update: days boarding

Wednesday, August 2nd, 2006

Thought I’d do an update on a 2005 blog entry about how many days boarding I’ve done (and how I really ought to be much better than I am, considering…).

Counting a week as 6 days and a fortnight as 13, but taking away days off, it’s 136 days (some fuller of boarding than others). That’s [...]

Photo of Ruth and Aiguille du Midi from Vallee Blanche

Wednesday, May 24th, 2006

Me, all wrapped up against the cold, on the Glacier du Geant at the beginning of the off-piste Vallee Blanche run. The peak in the background is the Aiguille du Midi, the top of the cable car from Chamonix that accesses the run.

Photo of ridge down from Aiguille du Midi

Wednesday, May 17th, 2006

The ridge down to the Vallee Blanche from the Aiguille du Midi lift station. Seen from below, having already negotiated it. The side we can see drops about 30 metres to rocks and bergschrund. The other side is a sheer drop over 2000 metres straight down to the Chamonix valley. We had to be roped [...]
