Thursday, January 3rd, 2008There is a good blog entry on the Whistler SAR blog about “Where not to go in Whistler“. If you’re going to Whistler and planning to do some backcountry riding I suggest you read it! We’ve got some guided bacckountry riding booked with Whistler Alpine Guides in Febuary. A report of that trip will appear here [...]
Sun Dog
Wednesday, December 12th, 2007We were lucky enough to see a quite spectacular Sun Dog on Sunday afternoon. The photo doesn’t really capture how spectacular it really was. I wanted to stop all the people skiing by who were missing it (you wouldn’t have seen it unless you’d looked back up the hill).
Snowboarding Lessons
Wednesday, December 12th, 2007We had another excellent lesson at the weekend and we were chatting to the instructor about why snowboarders tend to stop having lessons as soon as they can turn. It’s interesting since skiers tend to have more instruction every time they go on a trip.
My boarding lesson history is pretty chequered…
I learnt on the toothbrush at Yeovil [...]
The days are getting shorter
Wednesday, June 27th, 2007Well June 21st has been and gone so the days are getting shorter, this means I’m officially allowed to start thinking about snowy pursuits again! I’ve decided on my 5 missions for this season
Take my CASI Level 1 (and ideally pass it)
Learn more about avalanches (Whistler run some Free Avalanche Awareness Tours but this seems a minimum)
Go [...]
Music to my ears
Saturday, March 24th, 2007Now we live in Vancouver (still getting used to that idea) we’re expecting (and looking forward to) a horde of visitors descending on us during the summer and (especially) the winter months.
The first people to take advantage of our new location were Stu & Rach and Simon, before Simon arrived we headed out to Tofino [...]
Old Snowboard + Saw + Voile Split Decision Kit = Cheap Split board!
Tuesday, February 14th, 2006Oh dear, I really wish I hadn’t found out about this. If you have an old snowboard lieing around it doesn’t look that hard to make yourself a split board on the cheap. Simply follow these instructions and buy the attachments and skins and away you go.
Now, where can I find a table saw…
Snowboarding Tricks Videos
Thursday, January 19th, 2006I suspect lots of people have seen this before (been meaning to post it for a while. The BBC published a useful Tricks Teaching Guide. Best viewed with sound! There are some useful tips but I still can’t work out how you do a 360
Snow/Weather Forecasts
Wednesday, January 11th, 2006Being an avid snowboarder I tend to follow the weather forecasts rather closely at this time of year (anybody who knows me will be laughing at the understatement by now). To do this I’ve built up a collection of favourite websites covering Europe. The following sites are usually fairly accurate…
Accuweather do a 15 day [...]
Alpine Transfers - Customer service and price test 2006…
Thursday, November 10th, 2005Prompted by a mail from Transfer Intelligence I’m re-running my 2005 Transfer Customer Service test. Results to be posted in a couple of weeks!
Incidentally we used Snow Trip last year who were great. Only complaint was there was barely room for us and our luggage in the coach on the way home. We all got [...]
So you want to sell your board on eBay?
Tuesday, November 8th, 2005You’ve probably seen on Ruth’s Blog that we recently parted with 3 much loved snowboards. We didn’t get as much as we’d hoped for the boards but it’s nice to think that somebody out there will get a bit more use out of them.
We’d been putting off selling them for ages because we hadn’t worked [...]
